Letters from landfill employees concerned about their jobs are understandable, but they are deceptive, diversionary public relations tactics.  The “REAL DEAL” has everything to do with the Greater Pottstown Area getting dumped on and people getting sick for GREED.   To address a few issues:

  1. Waste Management’s scare tactics about “where your trash will go”, won’t work here.   Most people know there are 10 to 12 years of already permitted landfill space; other haulers that will take away their trash if Waste Management raises their rates; and free trash pick up is an unacceptable trade off for increased health risks to their families, friends, and neighbors.
  2. It’s an insult to “claim” Pottstown Landfill protects our environment or health, while emitting massive poisons into our air 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  3. No matter how Waste Management operates, or how well its employees do their jobs, wastes dumped in the Pottstown Landfill produce MAJOR amounts of dangerous air pollution.
  4. The health and quality of life for tens of thousands of people must take priority over less than 20 jobs.
  5. Bigger landfill, more waste, more toxic emissions too close to a heavily populated area.  It’s already too big and too much of a threat.
  6. Very little of the waste dumped here is from this area.   Much of it is industrial waste and very hazardous to human health.  It’s absurd to call all this waste a product.
  7. Tours of the landfill are misleading.  You can’t see air pollution or people getting sick from it every day.   Being closer, on tour, certainly won’t help your health.
  8. Pottstown Landfill’s air pollution may be among the worst in the nation.  It emits radiation and many other extremely harmful chemicals, into the top 10% of the most unhealthy and carcinogenic air in the nation.
  9. Waste Management owes this community far more than they give.   Waste Management’s miniscule donations can’t compensate for the enormous financial and physical burdens caused.    They’re trying to buy silence and support while they increase the poisons in our air.
  10. Waste Management bought science to attempt to minimize the real threat to public health.   Shocking PA Cancer Registry statistics around the Pottstown Landfill are reality, and can’t be blamed on progress.  They’re higher than the tri county, state, and nation, where there is also progress.
  11. Just because some people don’t get sick, doesn’t mean Pottstown Landfill’s dangerous air pollution isn’t a major factor in the illnesses of others.

The landfill must close NOW to prevent increased threats!    Hasn’t your family been dumped on and sacrificed long enough?    Write or e-mail DEP Secretary McGinty today.  Send bcc. to Governor Rendell, Francine Carlini, and ACE.
